SIBYLLE GEIGER – una vita per l'arte
Centro Espositivo Comunale (CEC), Piazza Guerrazzi - Cecina (LI)
Sibylle Piermattei-Geiger was an exceedingly modest person. She did not want to be the center of attention, and although she devoted her entire life to art, she never considered herself an artist. She thought of her costume designs as works of craftsmanship created for film, theater, ballet, and opera performances.
In November 2019, a small exhibition of Sibylle Piermattei-Geiger's costume designs was presented in a gallery in Basel, which received an unexpectedly positive response. Rocco Piermattei wished for an exhibition also in Cecina after the death of his wife, however the pandemic and other circumstances delayed the project. With the help of Alessandro Schiavetti and his team, Sibylle Piermattei-Geiger's exhibition will now finally be realized in her chosen hometown.
The Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger is delighted that Rocco Piermattei's long and outstanding wish is coming true – that Sibylle Piermattei-Geiger, patron and supporter of the arts, is being honored once again in this way.
Statement Raphael Suter, Director KBH.G
Sibylle Piermattei-Geiger's life was shaped by art. She was fascinated by it from an early age and her interest in art grew even more as she turned older. It was also significant that she did not want to use the family legacy established by her grandfather, Hermann Geiger, for her own life, but wanted it to benefit the general public. This was the beginning of the Fondazione Culturale Hermann Geiger. She did not want to give the foundation her name, but that of her grandfather. Her credo was simple: art and culture should be freely accessible to everyone. And so, over the course of ten years, numerous exhibitions were organized in Cecina, attracting a wide audience.
In 2018, Sibylle decided to bring the foundation back to her hometown, where she established the Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger I KBH.G. In 2019, drawings and sketches by Sibylle Piermattei-Geiger were also shown in Basel for the first time. This was part of a small gallery exhibition, as Sibylle did not want to attract attention to herself and her work. It was very well received in Basel and ultimately, Sibylle also enjoyed the exhibition and the accompanying publication about her work and her life.
