HOME IS A FOREIGN PLACE

“The artist Sandra Knecht defies categorization. No number of labels can do her justice. Her project at the Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger | KBH.G is proof of this. Home Is a Foreign Place is not merely an art exhibition; it’s a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, a total work of art that incorporates various media and engages the senses.” — Raphael Suter, Director Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger | KBH.G

Sandra Knecht (*1968 in Zurich, lives and works in Buus/BL) has been exploring the concept of "Heimat" for over a decade. For her, home is a fluid concept - personal, transient and shaped by relationships, experiences and memories. Home Is a Foreign Place shows how deeply this concept intervenes in human existence and addresses home as a feeling, a place and an idea.

The exhibition space is conceived as a deconstructed house and landscape in which the cycles of humankind and nature are perceived as one. From real places to dreamed, imaginary territories, Knecht stages a journey from the external to the internal. Along the way, we meet not only the artist and her animals, but also demons and intermediate creatures that stand for self-empowerment and knowledge.
